There are several covered bridges in the Midwest known for being haunted. Indiana’s Haunted Bridges
Indiana has two well-known haunted bridges. The Edna Collins Bridge in Clinton Falls is allegedly haunted by the ghost of Edna Collins, a young girl who drowned in the creek below the bridge. The bridge was originally built in 1922.
The other bridge is one near Avon. This bridge is known by local lore to have several ghostly apparitions. One is thought to be the ghost of a young girl who was killed by a train. Another ghost is called the Crying Ghost Mother. This legend stems from a real event where a mother fell from the bridge with her baby.
Locals claim to hear the ghostly cries of the baby and then the wails from the mother. Drivers often honk their horns going over the bridge. The ghostly activity is generally reported at night.
Ohio’s Haunted Bridges
Not to be outdone, Ohio also has a few haunted bridges. One such bridge is in Everett. The covered bridge in this town was constructed after a tragic event and is now reported to be haunted, as well as the surrounding area.
Meanwhile, the Screaming Bridge of Maud Hughes Road in Ohio is even spookier. According to local lore, the Screaming Bridge is the site of many paranormal activities. It’s not certain when it was first called the Screaming Bridge, but one theory is that the original bridge had grooves and caused a screaming noise when a vehicle drove over it.
However, urban legends say that two people died in a railroad accident nearby, and that has contributed to the paranormal activities. Another story has a woman being pushed or falling to her death off the bridge. Still another story tells of a woman committing suicide on the bridge.
Other Haunted Midwest Bridges
The Moorhead Railroad bridge in Minnesota also has a haunted legend. According to local lore, a woman was killed when she tried to board a moving train. Now, the ghost roams the area with glowing red eyes.
Illinois is also known to have several haunted bridges. One is the Old Train Bridge, which is rumored to have a phantom train. At night, the bridge shakes and you can hear a train whistle in the distance, but there’s no train to be seen.
There’s also a Sleepy Hollow Park in Illinois with a bridge. That bridge may also be haunted. In fact, it collapsed overnight in 2017. The exact cause of the collapse wasn’t immediately known. Fortunately, no one was under it at the time.
Several other haunted bridges are rumored in Illinois as well. Based on local accounts, it appears that Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio are known for the most haunted bridges.
